Could you become a Food Waste Hero? Save money and help the climate!
Did you know that the average family of four can save just over £60 per month by reducing their food waste? Or that in the UK, we throw away 10.2m tonnes of food waste each year, creating more than 20m tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions – the same emissions as 3.5m cars? It’s clear that food waste has a big impact on our wallets and the environment.
These figures can seem pretty overwhelming. However, if we all start reducing food waste at home, we can change this.
Action for Local Food is looking for people to take part in a new Food Waste Heroes programme, where you can lead the way in local food waste action. Participants would be supported to take measurements of the food waste they are producing at home over the span of a few weeks. The programme uses a 'citizen science' approach, which simply means you will be recording basic data such as the weight of your food waste and then send this to our project team.
As a Food Waste Hero, you will get to take part in free workshops that will help you learn new tips and tricks to tackle your food waste. By reducing your waste, you can save money and help the climate at the same time. A win-win!
