The past few months have been a strange time for everyone, and for community centres too. They have had to close their doors, move to home working, and change the way they run their activities. We know community centres are great, that’s why we celebrate them every year, but this year they have gone above and beyond for their communities, really showing just how important they are.
From food deliveries, calling users regularly to catch up, and collecting and distributing tech equipment, community centres in Islington and across the country have played a huge part in keeping people connected during lockdown, and they deserve our thanks! It’s been amazing to see the way that community centres have adapted so quickly to a very different way of working. With many staff at home, services have continued to run as best they can, ensuring that even with the buildings closed, they still have a presence in their communities.
Naturally, physical health concerns have been at the centre of conversation over the last few months, however there has also been increased conversation about community and connections. With mutual-aid groups popping up all over the country, and over half a million people volunteering to help the government NHS scheme, we can see that community is not lost. This is a great time to sustain and build communities, and community centres provide a perfect physical space to do so. As we see centres begin to open their doors to the ‘new normal’ over the next few months, remember the part they have played in being there for local people during lockdown, and support them to continue to do this for months and years to come.
