Through the pro-bono support of Simmons & Simmons, a world-class international law firm based in the City of London, back in 2001, we were able to come up with a legal structure for Octopus that provided:
- mutual connectivity between the multi-purpose community centres involved, and
- legal reasurrance that the individual Management Committees/Board of Trustees needed to make sure their own organisations were protected.
Octopus currently has 9 Director/Trustees, each representing each of the large multi-purpose community centres involved. The role of Director/Trustee is taken up by the appointed Centre Manager/Chief Exectutive Officer. A simple, uncomplicated yet very effective mutual 'investment' of time, skills and expertise.
Some think our structure and way of working is unique. It certainly provides us with the vehicle and platform to inform and influence. And, it has been known for us to be referred to as a 'best practice' model in community development collaborations.
