Voluntary Action Islington Working with Community Centres and Community Buildings Supporting a Vital Community Resource in Islington

Voluntary Action Islington’s Community Buildings Project provides support to voluntary, community and faith organisations in Islington to improve the use of community centres and community buildings. The project runs until June 2014 and aimsto bring about a more intensive use of community buildings by a greater diversity of people.

What the project does:

  • Provides direct support to individual organisations managing premises. This includes advice about negotiating leases, marketing, fund-raising, quality standards, governance and other management issues. Support is also provided through training and workshops.

  • Helps community groups get access to premises, especially small and recently formed groups.

  • Supports collaborative working and networking between community centres.  A project to achieve savings and other efficiencies through joint-purchasing is underway with community hubs, and the plan is to extend it more widely.

  • Provides a bank of resources for running community premises which is freely available to all.  (See www.vai.org.uk/community-buildings) Circulates regular items of premises-related news and information.

  • Works with Islington Council, other partners and stake-holders to shape and influence the policies and practices that affect community buildings to create a positive policy environment for these buildings and the people who run them and use them.
